I started my visit to Cabo San Lucas by
staying in a town about 20 miles before it called San Jose
del Cabo. The strategy behind staying at this town was
that it's going to be much cheaper than a big popular
destination will be and it will be more peaceful. San Jose
del Cabo is sort of Cabo San Lucas’s little, quieter
brother. I met a fellow solo traveler who I shared a cab
with into the town center from the bus station and talked
with him about travel styles. I admired his travel style, he
told me that when he gets into a new town he takes a taxi
and asks the driver to take him to the town center.
Their are some travelers that I really think a lot of, that
do not carry a travel book. They just wing it completely -
he was one of them. He also carried a simple black bag like
mine.
After getting a good night's sleep I got
on a public bus to Cabo San Lucas that stop along the way to
pick up hotel workers and rich people staying at fancy
expensive resort hotels. I thought to myself gee I’d never
travel if I thought I had to spend what they must be
spending i.e. $200/Night versus my $20/Night. Once I got
there I made my way to the ritzy Solmar resort hotel that
the book that I was using mentions. If you walk through the
lobby as if you're staying there, you will find yourself
onto a private beach. I remember thinking I'm glad I've got
the book that tells me about this little secret because it
proved to be an excellent experience I was a little nervous
walking through the lobby but I made it and once you go
through the lobby there it is a beautiful private beach only
accessible from that hotel. Off to the left where incredible
rock formations, Lover’s Beach and the world-famous Land’s
End Arch. I was delighted by the natural beauty of the
roaring ocean, (too rough for swimming) climbing awesome
rock formations and all for free.
My Teva sandals proved themselves that
day because I kind of did some technical climbing to go up
these rock formations that sort of made a natural ladder of
steps into the sky. Some of my pictures are from way up
there. Cool experience, but a little scary at one point. I
found myself face to face with a huge beehive nested in the
rock.
I thought, way up there what could I do
if I got attacked? Fall to my death, get stung like crazy
and crawl back down. Glad it did happen. I made my way to
Lover’s Beach from there that is in between to huge sets of
rocks and enjoyed watching some local kids surfing. This
whole area was pretty secluded. I was glad not to be overrun
with people. Looking out to the ocean to left was the
backside of the arch. I was unable to walk to the arch
because of high tide but it was pretty neat to get so close
on my own without a tour group or boat.
I can't forget to mention the party scene
in Cabo San Lucas. From what I could see there were some
really cool bars to drink at like Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo,
El Squid Roe and many others. Beautiful colorful neon
everywhere. Quite the strip - I got something to eat
and people watched. I think those that come to Cabo San
Lucas to party will not be disappointed but in my opinion
it's a very Americanized place catering to Americans. You
are not going to get the usual Mexican charm in this town. I
guess it is up to what mood you’re in. I don’t go out of my
way to drink alone in a strange and potentially dangerous
place. Best left to a group where you watch each other’s
back’s. After a couple of days of fun I headed back to La
Paz for a ferry ride back to the mainland.
